Pretenders

Pretenders

1980 sire records

Winchester pressing

There is nothing really exceptional about my copy of this album, actually Discogs has several of the same pressing for sale around $3. I think I paid $5-or-6 for my used copy around 10 years ago. So by that economy I’m already upside down. But that’s not my point today or for this album…

What experience lead you to start collecting in your particular format?

Don’t get me wrong here; an OG/ 1st pressing is worth pursuing, I’m also into limited edition, numbered, color variants, remastered, etc... Collectors be collecting …

What I’m getting at is that feeling you get from music (or whatever you collect). That experience drives the value.

The 2007 movie ‘Reign Over Me’ with Adam Sandler has this quirky little scene where the character shows his friend a copy of this Pretenders album. (Btw this movie has a great soundtrack, but you probably already knew that). He makes his friend smell the album, “I love the smell of these things. smells like the late 70’s doesn’t it?”.      I understood all that, the mood and vibe, the emotion, the place it takes us when we hold that long sought after find/ our prize is in our hands.

So it’s this album, it’s seeing/ feeling myself in that scene, and another little movie that works around record collectors ‘High Fidelity’ (you may have heard of it) all had a hand in sparking my redirect from collecting CD’s to Vinyl.

Ok let’s talk about the songs for second…This really is one of the truly great debut albums! Comes out swinging right away! the rawness and strength; little punk aggression, a little garage rock, some new wave pop style, that tough female smart ass swagger up front, jumpy guitar riffs, great melodies, it’s frantic and edgy. Even when it seems to slow down on side two it’s only to let you think you’re catching up. No skips here folks/ front to back good. Timeless & fresh energy after 40 years. Goosebumps every time I drop the needle on this one…

This one right here is why #parkersplaylist collects vinyl.
